Indigenous Students' Attitudes towards Learning English through a Virtual Program: A Study in a Colombian Public University
Cuasialpud Canchala,Ruth Elena;
Profile Issues in Teachers` Professional Development , 2010,
Abstract: this article reports an exploratory study carried out at a public university in bogotá, colombia, with two indigenous students who took a level i virtual english-course during the second term of 2008 and the first term of 2009. the aim was to analyse their attitudes towards the learning of english through the virtual modality. interviews, observations and questionnaires were used for data collection. it was found that indigenous students felt frustrated taking a virtual english course, and that their motivation as regards the learning of this language is very low. thus, they need to be motivated and guided along the process. at the end, some recommendations for teaching or tutoring indigenous students, learning english virtually or any of the other modalities of the english program at the university were derived.

Chitosan-Genipin Microspheres for the Controlled Release of Drugs: Clarithromycin, Tramadol and Heparin
Ruth Harris,Elena Lecumberri,Angeles Heras
Marine Drugs , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/md8061750
Abstract: The aim of this study was to first evaluate whether the chitosan hydrochloride-genipin crosslinking reaction is influenced by factors such as time, and polymer/genipin concentration, and second, to develop crosslinked drug loaded microspheres to improve the control over drug release. Once the crosslinking process was characterized as a function of the factors mentioned above, drug loaded hydrochloride chitosan microspheres with different degrees of crosslinking were obtained. Microspheres were characterized in terms of size, morphology, drug content, surface charge and capacity to control in vitro drug release. Clarithromycin, tramadol hydrochloride, and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) were used as model drugs. The obtained particles were spherical, positively charged, with a diameter of 1–10 μm. X-Ray diffraction showed that there was an interaction of genipin and each drug with chitosan in the microspheres. In relation to the release profiles, a higher degree of crosslinking led to more control of drug release in the case of clarithromycin and tramadol. For these drugs, optimal release profiles were obtained for microspheres crosslinked with 1 mM genipin at 50 oC for 5 h and with 5 mM genipin at 50 oC for 5 h, respectively. In LMWH microspheres, the best release profile corresponded to 0.5 mM genipin, 50 oC, 5 h. In conclusion, genipin showed to be eligible as a chemical-crosslinking agent delaying the outflow of drugs from the microspheres. However, more studies in vitro and in vivo must be carried out to determine adequate crosslinking conditions for different drugs.
cohesión social y espacio de aparición: el papel de los espectadores en el concepto de ciudadanía de Hannah Arendt

Abstract: in this paper, categories of social cohesion and space of appearance are explored in the concept of citizenship by hannah arendt and more specifically about spectators role. in the analysis of citizenship concept in arendt, the paradox that says about the social and political, being the first factor decisive for social cohesion and the second one for construction and development of political communities, whose basis is human dignity. the article firstly deals with general considerations about arendt's concept of citizenship in order to go the reader into space of appearance, shared by actors, but mostly by spectators, whose preponderance over the social is defined in the plural plot of developed stories about events in space that are common in each other, equivalent to ''between'', the basis of citizenship practice with its consistent implications for the concept and emerging education plans for citizenship and civic education.
Is there a Wealth Dividend of Aging Societies?
Marc Suhrcke,Elena Fumagalli,Ruth Hancock
Public Health Reviews , 2010,
Abstract: Apocalyptic views on the social, economic and health consequences of aging abound. This review examines the potential upside of aging, in particular from a public health perspective. First, we review the evidence on whether there is healthy aging in the sense of a compression of morbidity: people spending fewer of the life years gained in poor health. The evidence turns out to be decidedly mixed, depending on the country, the data and perhaps most critically on the definition of “health” considered. Second, we explore the potential and actual labour market impact a healthy elderly population could make. We find considerable support for the notion that if only effective retirement age was raised to reflect past and future increases in life expectancy, then the result could be a significant increase in elderly labour force participation rates. Moreover, a significant share of the already retired elderly population is in good health, indicating a potential unused capacity for the labour market. Third, we turn to the impact of improved health (especially among the elderly) on healthcare expenditures. In general, evidence does not support the optimistic expectation that improved health will mitigate or even reverse the trend of increasing health expenditures. Even if better health may, in some circumstances, lead to lower healthcare spending, other cost drivers, in particular technological advances, will more than outweigh any such expenditure-reducing effect. On the other hand, there is not much support for the hypothesis that better health by itself is a major cost driver. Policy can make a difference in facilitating the realisation of the potential benefits of a healthy aging scenario. This does, however, require a coordinated approach between social, economic and health policy and will enter into policy arenas in which the political costs of reform, despite their expected societal benefits, may become a bottleneck that is hard to overcome.

In this paper, categories of social cohesion and space of appearance are explored in the concept of citizenship by Hannah Arendt and more specifically about spectators role. In the analysis of citizenship concept in Arendt, the paradox that says about the social and political, being the first factor decisive for social cohesion and the second one for construction and development of political communities, whose basis is human dignity. Abstract: in this paper we applied the dynamic system theory to the measurement of the stability of the european process of convergence. in particular, lyapunov?s exponents are used to verify the influence of political and economic decisions made during the creation of the european union on the stability (or instability) of exchange rate fluctuation in different european countries. we find evidence of such relationship
